Samiyam

September 18, 201010:00 pm

Beats People Movement* in association with Sick Disco! and Dubstep Alliance Aotearoa are proud to bring international guest SAMIYAM to Auckland
SAMIYAM (USA)
REPRESENTING:
BRAINFEEDER / HYPERDUB / POO-BAH RECORDS / ALL CITY RECORDS
A master of the shimmering, synthetic and rhythmically stunted, Brainfeeder /Hyperdub affiliate Samiyam’s can be defined artistically by relationships. Firstly, with music, secondly, with the intensely talented modern beat musicians (Flying Lotus, The Gaslamp Killer, Ras G etc) he moves with in both the L.A. of the real world and the uniquely spiked L.A. of the internet…
A kid whose parents could only punish him for being naughty by confiscating his boombox, Samiyam also remembers being affected by the music of Michael Jackson and recounts singing along to the big tunes and mimicking MJ’s dance moves in the mirror at age six. Captured by Hip-Hop in his teens (“I really got into dudes like DJ Premier and Alchemist,” he says) at the end of high school, Samiyam purchased an MPC and began attempting to write like his heroes. Eventually moving onto to a Roland MC-303 Groovebox, with this shift in hardware came a shift in musical mindset. “That was when I started really feeling like I was making the ideas that were in my head,” he says.
Obsessed with “seventies [and eighties] RnB and Funk,” having been programmed to approach music in a looped format by his years of Hip-Hop fixation, Samiyam found himself listening for the “one four bar part that sounded so good I wanted to hear it repeat for three minutes.” Applying this to his arrangements, he formed what he calls, “a friendship of the new millennium,” with L.A beat auteur Flying Lotus when the two discovered each other’s music online.
Now based in L.A., which he describes as, “full of people I felt like I could really get along with,” as a key member of Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder movement, the last few years have seen Samiyam perform across America, Europe and Asia. This September, following recent visits from L.A residents Dâm Funk and The Gaslamp Killer, Samiyam will make his New Zealand debut. “I’ve had so many people hitting me up about it online,” he says. “I’m pretty happy about it all.”
- Words by Martyn Pepperell for the Groove Guide

“Heyhey so here’s the first of many to come… This mix was put together by Ras_G, SAMIYAM and myself. Some time last year. We originally gave these out on CD at the Brainfeeder event in LA, but here it is, just for you.”

DOCTOR P BIO
Doctor P discovered the music world back in 2000. At the age of 14 he started to play instruments, finding a great love for the drums and guitar, as well as many others. By 16 he took this talent to the live stage with unsigned bands, developing his gift to a better level and getting a taste of the musical world he was destined for.
2 years later, he discovered the world of DJing and electronic music production, leading him to start experimenting further with his talents. This led him to University where he decided to study music production, at Northampton and then at the official Steinberg University in Huddersfield gaining a 2nd Class BSC (Hons) in Popular Music Production.
With his new skills, Doctor P started to attract interest from artists and labels within the drum & bass market, the first being Cyntax Error Records in 2006. This saw his first début release: ‘The Lawnmower Tune b/w Vitamin Funk’ which had additional production by DJ Amadeus. This was to be the record label’s début 12″ under the pseudonym ‘Sounds Destructive’
Later releases ‘Police Tape’ & ‘Many Moons’ followed with production help from DJ Kulprit, which gained interest from some of the artists major players like Kenny Ken & Brockie.
By 2008 Doctor P had developed his skills further and welcomed his first solo 12″ ‘Raving Rude Boy b/w Friendly Street’, released on ‘Second City Records’.
2008 also took a turn in Doctor P’s career after being talent spotted by Krafty MC of Maximum Boost records. Doctor P was introduced to label manager & co owner DJ Swan-E who drafted a contract and signed him to become a Maximum Boost Records artist. A mixture of wisdom and talent combined the pair to produce their début collaboration ‘Straight to Ya Ear’ which featured the vocals of MC Fearless.
It didn’t take the pair long to click together and with their talent mixed into one package they released ‘Give Me More/Paralysis From Analysis’ which became the labels final release of 2008.
2009 promised to be a big year for Doctor P as a solo artist as well as part of the newly formed Slum Dogz. He branched out into dubstep to show his diversity as a producer, joining forces with Flux Pavilion to bring ‘Air Raid’ to the dance floors. With this release the pair decided, along with Swan-E, to create Circus Records. With his current release ‘Sweet Shop’ smashing almost every corner of the globe, and with over 10,000 copies sold, it is the biggest dub step track to date of 2010. Doctor P has certainly cemented himself firmly in the music world.

CRUSHINGTON BIO
Theorizing that one could through the use of bass frequencies, travel between parallel universes, A Dubstep production and DJ trio known as Crushington led an elite group of bass scientists into the desert to develop a top-secret project known as The Sine Wave Leap. Pressured to prove their theories or lose record label funding, Crushington prematurely stepped into the bass accelerator, and vanished.
They awoke to find themselves in another universe; our own. Soon afterwards sent to prison for a music piracy crime they didn’t commit, Crushington promptly escaped from a maximum security stockade, fleeing into the international underground.
Fortunately, contact with their own universe was maintained through brain-wave transmissions with Steve, the project observer, who appears in the form of a hologram that only Crushington can see and hear, and led them to their sympathetic allies; The Upbeats and Black Sun Empire.
Trapped in our world, they find themselves leaping from gig to gig, studio to studio, putting bass where things were once treble; and hoping each time that their next leap will be the leap home.

Headhunter aka Addison Groove

October 21, 201010:00 pm

HEADHUNTER has been carving out a totally unique place in the dubstep / bass / uk / futuristic / whatever -theheckyou -wanttocallit scene with his new project ADDISON GROOVE. Being inspired by the Chicago ‘Juke’ scene, he started dropping some of these 140bpm jacked up trax into his sets, and it was a short gap from there to making his own take on that sound. With bouncing 808 claps and bass, warm pads, and crazy cut up vocals, the tune that blew up first was ‘Footcrab’ . Gaining attention from bass expert Loefah of Digital Mystikz, it finally ended up on wax on Loefah’s awesome Swamp81 imprint. Ridiculously catchy and refreshingly clean, his sound is a great example of how this scene keeps reinventing itself and taking on new forms. Come down and catch one of his blistering sets!
