Truth

November 22, 200810:00 pm

WHATS DOWN LOW PRESENTS…

[DEEP MEDi MUSIK UK]

For their first ever NZ appearance!

The theory that isolation breeds creativity has never been as apt as it is for Truth, a dubstep outfit hailing from one of the world’s most southern cities. What began as a musical experiment has now become something much more significant. A chance encounter with dubstep visionary Mala late in 2007 inspired the New Zealand trio, who have been working together for years, to try their hand at a new sound – one comprising serious sub bass and snares so nasty they make eyes water. Within days of slipping Mala a handful of tunes made in as many days, Truth had been signed to his label Deep Medi – widely regarded as one the most progressive in the scene, alongside a cluster of highly respected artists including Loefah, Kromestar, Silkie & Quest and Goth Trad. Truth’s style defies categorisation, encompassing an array of melodies and vocals within spacious beats that range from half-step stompers like ‘The Fatman’ to deeper tunes like ‘Stolen Children’. One common element underpins every track though: a heavy bassline riddim that lays sheer force on any system heavy enough to handle it. In just a year, the sound of Truth has spread across the world. ‘The Fatman’ has been pulled back countless times in numerous cities, from Dubwar at Club Love in New York, to Sonar in Barcelona, to Mass in Brixton – the home of dubstep’s seminal club night, DMZ. Today, in a scene that is defined by dubplate culture, some of its biggest players are dropping Truth dubs in their sets including Mala, Skream, DMZ, and Goth Trad, to name a few. Nick Argon is flying the flag in LA, while Skream is showcasing their beats in his legendary sets and on his notorious Rinse FM radio show Stella Sessions. Watch out for the 12â€? Vinyl release on Deep Medi Musik (DM014) out soon! “Unthinking respect for authority is the greatest enemy of truth.â€? - Albert Einstein

Alongside…

ILL-FIGZ

“Subtle since nineteen seventy seven not a trumpet playa but a sound system representing, the true heavy weight stylee, dee jaying the drum and the bass since way back, holy shit what happed to that. Grimey clubs to outdoor systems figzee’s dubstep vinyl collection will cater to all addiction. From Benga to Tes La Rok in the southern hemi circuit subtle sound system is considered the horse cock, stacking it up on the line to extract the true proper bassline, sweet jesus bring back the grime,,,,,,, wah wah wah”

L QUE

L Que is well known for his talents in building dubstep sets on a foundation of Jungle, Roots, Dub, Dancehall and Hip Hop. He is host of long-running Jungle/Dubstep radio show Metrobeatz on RDU98.5FM. Expect his sets to be based around original tunes written alongside J Red, Mafic & Werd2jaH alongside the freshest dubs from the likes of P Vans, DZ, Lapo, LD, LV and plenty more. Representing soundsystem culture with the Bassfactory and Subtle Soundsystem events, this man never fails to disappoint.

KNUCKLES

After falling in love with drum & bass at the age of 14 Knuckles quickly became hooked on BASS. Outdoor parties has always been his scene and for the last few years has played regularly at events such as Soulstice, Equinox, Canaan Downs Festival, Sound Invasion, Voyage and plenty in between. As a result of this his sound has very much adapted to the great outdoors, always digging out the rarities, usually on the dub tip and always heavily bassline driven. Currently pushing the dubstep sound expect rolling beats, big bass, plenty of dubs and grimey as hell tunes. Bringing the outdoors to the club this set’s going to be something a little different…

CHOP DOGG

Anybody who’s seen this man play knows he’s got the skills. For this one he’s going to be on the warmup duties playing deep and psychedelic, doing what he does best and getting everybody in the mood.

Dub Period feat OoGun

November 28, 200810:00 pm

OoGuN

Ogun is the Yoruba god of Iron and War. He’s also known as Ogoun in vodou (voodoo) and santeria. Ogun is known for his hot temper - a god that got so carried away fighting for his followers against their enemies that he butchered everybody on both sides. OoGuN makes dubstep. He gets so carried away that he drops BASS on everybody on all sides. Ogun is also known for saving my great great grandfather, so it’s payback time. This music is for possession. If OoGuN favours you, the music will make it possible for Ogun to take possession of you. If OoGuN favours you, the barking of dogs and the sound of metal clashing with metal will become yours. Then again , you might just need to put the spliff down and sit down for a bit.

DJ Remarc

November 30, 200810:00 pm

REMARC begun his music career at 13 years of age playing reggae, rare
groove and electro at house party’s in and around his birth town of
Brockley in south east London. At 17 he got he’s first break as a DJ on the
infamous Weekend Rush pirate radio station playing hardcore and through
the progression into jungle. It was here that he initially made a name for
himself as a DJ but only really touching a London based audience.

Most of us first heard of REMARC when the dark-side anthem Ricky was
released back in ‘93 on his own label Dollar records. He went on to
produce some of the most rinsing jungle imaginable by becoming the
ultimate don of the Amen break.

UK based jungle producer and DJ, REMARC is widely proclaimed to be
“king of the Amen” and “a pioneer of ragga jungle” due to his chopped up
tracks for legendary labels such as Dollar, White House, Kemet, Labbello
Blanco and Suburban Base. The majority of these tunes were compiled
alongside previously unreleased dub plates for a two volume retrospective
released by Planet Mu. The re-releases of these classics soon moved as
many units if not more than a successful drum n bass release proving that
Remarc and the Jungle sound is still an unstoppable force in the game. It
also introduced him to the world of other electronic music and a new
generation of Junglists and amen mashers, ultimately building a 2nd fan
base.

With tracks appearing on over 111 releases worldwide there is no
questioning that if you have not heard of Remarc, its time to open your
ears to the founding father of the amen sound. For those familiar with the
legend He is still spinning Jungle (oldskool and new) worldwide and is
becoming equally known for his DJ skills and nasty dub plate specials.

2008 projects include the birth of his new record label Definition
Recordings – new releases from the man, (the first to be launch tracks for
his label) – a second American tour as well as an Australian tour.

There is no doubt big things are on the horizon for the man that is
passionate about what he does and is dedicated to flying the flag for
Jungle - the sound and the scene.
