DJ Remarc

“CALLING ALL JUNGLE, DRUM N BASS AND DUBSTEP HEADS”
JAPM in Association with Base FM are excited to present
REMARC - “KING OF THE JUNGLE!!”
Thurs 4th December RISING SUN K’rd Auckland
This legendary producer/DJ needs little introduction but for those that don’t know;
UK DJ REMARC is widely proclaimed to be “king of the Amen” and “a pioneer of ragga jungle” due to his chopped up tracks for legendary labels such as Dollar, White House, Kemet, Labbello Blanco and Suburban Base.
Recently the majority of these tunes were compiled alongside previously unreleased dub plates for a two volume retrospective released by the highly acclaimed Planet Mu label. The re-releases of these classics soon moved as many units if not more than a successful drum n bass release proving that Remarc and the Jungle sound is still an unstoppable force in the game. It has recently introduced him to the world of other electronic music and a new generation of Junglists and amen mashers worldwide
With tracks appearing on over 111 releases there is no questioning that if you have not heard of Remarc, its time to open your ears to the founding father of the amen sound. For those familiar with the legend he is still spinning Jungle (oldskool and new) worldwide and is becoming equally known for his DJ skills and nasty dub plate specials.
2008 projects include the birth of his new record label Definition Recordings and a world tour to promote the sound
There is no doubt big things are on the horizon for the man that is passionate about what he does and is dedicated to flying the flag for Jungle - the sound and the scene.
For his definition recordings tour Remarc will be packing all of his classics mostly in exclusive VIP form as well as some very special remixes of other artists work - Add to this unheard dublates from his new label - and we’re Guaranteed a night of cutting edge amen pressure!!
So don’t miss this opportunity to witness the first and possibly only time the jungle legend touches down in Auckland.

Plastician is undoubtedly one of the UK’s true underground bass renegades.
In this game since day dot, he has honed is terrifying skills at the decks since age 16, starting out on London pirate stations 2G FM and Delight FM before hitting the home of dubstep and grime, Rinse Fm in 2004 .
Well ahead of the game, PLASTICIAN quickly hit the buttons, and went about carving his own sound, merging his love of dark garage, grime and dubstep into some of the scene’s most diverse upfront bass bombs.
PLASTICIAN quickly found himself on the release sheets for practically every label worth caring about > from seminal grime and proto dubstep imprints Contagious, Soulja and Road, to Aphex Twin’s Rephlex label along Planet Mu, Soul Jazz, Dump Valve and many more.
Not content, Aged 20, PLASTICIAN started his own imprint, Terrorhythm Recordings and established his name as key producer on the grime
and dubstep scene working with MC’s Skepta and JME, producing 2 full length albums in the process that
showcased his deft ability to produce the rawest, deep dark underground beats on road.
People from outside the dubstep, grime axis also took note, with PLASTICIAN doing a host of remix work, including rerubs of MIA’s Uraqt track for XL Recordings, Alter Ego’s “Rocker”, The Black Ghosts “Some Way Through THis” and most recently Kosheen’s “Guilty”.
It would be easy to dismiss this man’s ability at the decks as a mere sideline to his production talents.
Fortunately PLASTICIAN’s reputation on the 1 and 2’s is without compare. He currently holds down residencies at FWD, DMZ and Fabric in London and has toured all over Europe, Japan and the US. Testament to his abilities ,PLASTICIAN was recently chosen to mix the massive Rinse Volume 6 compilation.
Unique to all other dubstep Dj’s, PLASTICIAN rifles of his machine gun mixing with aid of NZ’s own SERATO’s scratch live, allowing the man
to carry an arsenal of exclusive material.
Strap yourself in, this one promises to be mental!

Truth

BLAMBOX AUDIO Presents TRUTH (chch)
The theory that isolation breeds creativity has never been as apt as it is for Truth, a dubstep outfit hailing from one of the world’s most southern cities. What began as a musical experiment has now become something much more significant. A chance encounter with dubstep visionary Mala late in 2007 inspired the New Zealand trio, who have been working together for years, to try their hand at a new sound – one comprising serious sub bass and snares so nasty they make eyes water. Within days of slipping Mala a handful of tunes made in as many days, Truth had been signed to his label Deep Medi – widely regarded as one the most progressive in the scene, alongside a cluster of highly respected artists including Loefah, Kromestar, Silkie & Quest and Goth Trad. Truth’s style defies categorisation, encompassing an array of melodies and vocals within spacious beats that range from half-step stompers like ‘The Fatman’ to deeper tunes like ‘Stolen Children’. One common element underpins every track though: a heavy bassline riddim that lays sheer force on any system heavy enough to handle it. In just a year, the sound of Truth has spread across the world. ‘The Fatman’ has been pulled back countless times in numerous cities, from Dubwar at Club Love in New York, to Sonar in Barcelona, to Mass in Brixton – the home of dubstep’s seminal club night, DMZ. Today, in a scene that is defined by dubplate culture, some of its biggest players are dropping Truth dubs in their sets including Mala, Skream, DMZ, and Goth Trad, to name a few. Nick Argon is flying the flag in LA, while Skream is showcasing their beats in his legendary sets and on his notorious Rinse FM radio show Stella Sessions. Watch out for the 12” Vinyl release on Deep Medi Musik (DM014) out soon! “Unthinking respect for authority is the greatest enemy of truth.” - Albert Einstein
with Undertow / Blackplanet (QT) / Woosh / Billy T on support.
Big thanks go out to Emersons and Red Bull..churr!

The History of Breaks
The History of Breaks
Saturday 13 December
Fu, 4 Wolfe Street
Auckland
It was possibly one morning sometime in two thousand and eight, somewhere in Wellington airport, at some time or another that Page3 and Defcon1, great chums indeed, threw about the idea of educating the electro house populous, that have been rampaging through Auckland’s dance scene for a number of years now, on the sound of Breaks. Both these global jet setting superstars’ rise to fame was in fact due to the powerful influence of the Breaks sound but unfortunately Defcon1 is now famous for cheesey electro house sets and Page3 for mixing together Milli Vanilli, Boney M and Grease megamixes… Oooer. Shot lads! Talk about falling by the wayside!
Anyway, they woke up and are now basically (even though they actually have no idea, at all, about much) setting up school at Fu with the idea of helping to inject some excitement back into the Breaks scene and educating the electro house massive on the “good” genre.
In fact they have absolutely no idea where Breaks comes from but reckon it goes a little something like this:
The Hip Hop break → Uptempo electro → Breakbeat Hardcore → Big Beat → Nu Skool Breaks as coined by Rennie Pilgrem et al → Breaks as we know it today.
Sounds good doesn’t it, and that’s the main thing. The Defcon1 / Page3 combo is so charismatic that they can have anyone believing anything at anytime.
Now, they plan to run a series of these events rotating the DJs, hopefully getting some old men out of retirement at the same time, and most probably completely changing the above “timeline” to suit their needs. To be fair any bending of said “timeline” would be more perhaps to reflect other types of breakbeat music (that have had their own journeys over time) that along the way have had some influence on the Breaks sound. These types of music, or genres, could include in the future Jungle, Drum n Bass (same thing dumb arse), Miami Bass etc.
So essentially, whilst they had everyone’s best interests in mind, all they have really done is to completely confuse the fuck out of all their potential punters. Not only that but Defcon1 went and booked his tight little ass somewhere is Australia on the inaugural night; just to confuse everyone further.
At the end of the day, all confusion aside, they can and will (1) guarantee a series of mad fun (read “wicked n bad” if you is a true thug) nights showcasing some of the best (read oldest) DJs Auckland has to offer and some of Auckland’s brightest upcoming talent (read youngest) featuring (2) incredibly diverse sets throughout each night that (3) roughly reflect the progression over time, of the sound we know today simply as BREAKS.
Good on ya lads!
