Some call him “The Tarantino of Beats, others “God smashing stuff with his feet, however this one-man cinematic orchestra is best known as Flying Lotus. Having made serious moves in 2008 with the release of the critically acclaimed “Los Angeles, as well as the one of the most refreshing and original remixes of Lil Waynes, “A Milli, Flying Lotus is presenting Wellington with its first extraterrestrial voyage via laptop, sampler and turntables.

With his Grand Aunt being the late great jazz pianist Alice Coltrane (wife of the legendary John Coltrane) as well as working with the television network Adult Swim and graduating from the Red Bull Music Academy the man still finds time to drop mixes for Radio 1 and Brainfeeder.

A culmination of off kilter beats, atmospheric textured sounds juxtaposed with harmonious melodies and maaaassive bass, pushing the boundaries of organic electronic music, something like giving robots soul. Think Madlib meets Prefuse 73 meets Shakleton with the end result being deep and introspective enough for the thinkers yet heavy enough to get the party bumping.

Guaranteed to take you out of this world on a trip around the galaxy, you’d be a sucker to miss this shit. If you don’t know now you know…

Beats People Movement proudly presents

FLYING LOTUS (Live)
Warp Records / Plug Research / Brainfeeder, Los Angeles

THURSDAY 8th JANUARY

SEBA, 63 FORT ST, AUCKLAND CITY

Flying Lotus is commonly identified as a hip hop producer, but his style is drawn from many genres, including jazz, electronic and Brazilian music. His hip hop beats are unique for their hazy, ambient sound, while his percussion is purposefully slightly off time, creating a messier, more organic atmosphere. His productions draw comparisons to DJ Shadow, Madlib and more often J Dilla, his beats also bear similarities to the wonky Dubstep-esque beats of Scottish producer Rustie or Hyperdub label boss Kode9. The man they call “Flylo” doesn’t let one or two genres weigh him down though and he is essentially a producer of future beats. His great aunt Alice Coltrane (married to John) was a key influence in Flylo’s introduction to musical creativity and these Jazz roots can be heard throughout his work. Official remixes spanning just the past few months has seen him collaborating with the likes of Lil Wayne as well as Martyn and King Midas Sound. Likewise his beats have recieved the remix treatment from Ras G as well as Japan-based Dubstep producer Quarta330.

Truth

January 17, 200910:00 pm

TRUTH (DEEP MEDI MUSIK UK)

The theory that isolation breeds creativity has never been as apt as it is for Truth, a dubstep outfit hailing from one of the world’s most southern cities.

What began as a musical experiment has now become something much more significant. A chance encounter with dubstep visionary Mala (Digital Mystikz) late in 2007 inspired the New Zealand trio, who have been working together for years, to try their hand at a new sound – one comprising serious sub bass and snares so nasty they make eyes water.

Within days of slipping Mala a handful of tunes made in as many days, Truth had been signed to his label Deep Medi – widely regarded as one the most progressive in the scene, alongside a cluster of highly respected artists including Loefah, Kromestar, Silkie & Quest and Goth Trad.

Truth’s style defies categorisation, encompassing an array of melodies and vocals within spacious beats that range from half-step stompers like ‘The Fatman’ to deeper tunes like ‘Stolen Children’. One common element underpins every track though: a heavy bassline riddim that lays sheer force on any system heavy enough to handle it.

In just a year, the sound of Truth has spread across the world. ‘The Fatman’ has been pulled back countless times in numerous cities, from Dubwar at Club Love in New York, to Sonar in Barcelona, to Mass in Brixton – the home of dubstep’s seminal club night, DMZ.

Today, in a scene that is defined by dubplate culture, some of its biggest players
are dropping Truth dubs in their sets including Mala, Skream, DMZ, and Goth Trad, to name a few. Nick Argon is flying the flag in LA, while Skream is showcasing their beats in his legendary sets and on his notorious Rinse FM radio show Stella Sessions.

To top this all off, Skream played 3 Truth dubs at Phat09, with Benga giving them big ups on the mic, then dropped The Fatman himself! (due for release very soon)

Watch out for the 12 Vinyl release on Deep Medi Musik (DM014) out soon!

His latest album, London Zoo, reaches past narrow categorisation and brings together influences from dancehall, grime, ragga, dubstep and hip-hop and creates a sound that could only have come out of London sound-system culture, but whose appeal spans past any singular city or scene.

Alongside Warrior Queen - originally from Jamaica, this dancehall diva is now based in the UK and over the years has worked with top artists and labels including Penthouse, Philip ‘Fattis’ Burrel, Steelie and Cleevie, Flabba Holt, Roots Radics, DJ Zinc and Casual Records. With her tough lyrical styling and fresh from her hit single, Poison Dart, Warrior Queen brings real heat to the session each and every time!

Also featuring a red-hot line-up not seen before of some of Aotearoa’s biggest reggae and dubstep selectors - direct from Auckland, Stinky Jim, alongside Art Official and The Mighty Asterix, plus Evil (Bassweight Recordings), P-Vans, Thief and Steppa D (Strictly 138).
