Freq Nasty

March 6, 200910:00 pm

FreQ Nasty’s back and he’s pushing a new sound that’s destroying underground clubs around the world. Continually shape shifting under the wide umbrella of bass culture, FreQ Nasty forever stays one-step ahead of its ongoing hype-fuelled evolution. From garage, breaks to dubstep FreQ Nasty’s at the forefront of the freshest beats around.

Born in Fiji, raised in New Zealand and formed musically in the dance music revolution of London in the 90’s, FreQ Nasty now splits his time between Los Angeles and London. He started his career on the seminal UK label Botchit & Scarper in the late nineties, moving to SKINT records in 2003. He has gone on to release a slew of cutting-edge records collaborating and remixing a diverse range of artists including Fatboy Slim, Kelis, KRS One, Roots Manuva, Rodney P, and Reggae legend Junior Delgado. He co-founded the www.Giveback.net site in 2007 to help musicians and artists support causes they’re passionate about, and in the past year his collaboration with MIA producer Switch and NYC hipster Santogold ‘Creator’ has been an unavoidable crossover hit. His ground breaking FABRICLIVE 42 mix CD is out now on London super club Fabric’s own imprint, and he has a new artist album in the pipeline for 2009.

HISTORY
Santogold producer and collaborator, breakbeat innovator, and international DJ FreQ Nasty established himself as one of the UK dance music scene’s pioneers early on by producing many of breakbeat’s defining moments. Not content with rehashing his genre-defining debut album FreQ’s Geeks and Mutilations (1999), he dropped his “Bring Me The Head Of Freq Nasty’ album in 2003 for SKINT records, creating the template for the ‘ragga breaks’ movement and simultaneously kicking off the breakbeat garage scene with signature tracks ‘Goose’ and ‘Amped’ effortlessly traversing genres, earning plaudits from breakbeat and garage DJ’s, as well as house and techno jocks internationally. ‘04 and ‘05 saw FreQ touring the world with his ‘Video Nasty Experience’ live show, an eye-melting DJ/VJ fusion of animation, graphics and live Vjing perpetrated by a hit squad of crack artists including fellow New Zealanders ‘Brother’s Mogg’ (Lord of the Rings/King Kong animators), and ‘Gorrillaz’ artist Jamie Hewlett’s company Zombie Flesh Eaters.

In 2006 FreQ took time out in California to avoid the perennial UK winter and ended up semi relocating to the sunnier climes of Los Angeles. As the Web 2.0 phenomenon exploded in part out of LA, home to Yahoo, Google, Myspace etc, he connected with music oriented tech renegades from Yahoo and Shopzilla and a cell of underground code junkies out of San Francisco and spent a good portion of his down time creating www.Giveback.net, a website dedicated to enabling artists to use their musical clout to help make the world a better place. It launched in early ‘08 and he has since donated music for several campaigns exclusive to the Giveback site supporting freedom for the Tibetan people (with US artist Bassnectar), an irrigation system for a village in Ethiopia (with Damien Marley), and a music studio for kids in an economically deprived area of San Francisco (with Michael Franti).

As anticipation for the next album grew, 2007 found FreQ back in the studio working on prototypes for fresh new sounds that would take him in a new and exciting direction. In collaborating with MIA producer Switch they re-invented the idea of what dance music could be with the uncategorizable 2008 crossover hit ‘Creator’ featuring the vocals of the now ubiquitous Santogold, launching her career as an artist in the process.

The latest instalment of FreQ flavour dropped in the form of the FABRICLIVE 42 mix CD for legendary UK super club Fabric. Fabric described it as “Bridging the gaps between the most current sounds in the UK’s bass culture, FreQ rumbles with underground thunder in a staggering showcase of some of the rawest bass led beats around. Evading the pitfalls of a genre controlled mix yet at the same time avoiding the stop-start feel of a mash-up mix, on FabricLive42 he imaginatively arranges a tightly connected blend of FreQy tracks. From the bass heavy stomp of L-Viz 1990’s UK take on Baltimore club music, the blistering shatter of TRG’s ‘Oi Killa’, to a bunch of his own new productions including his hit with Switch and Santogold ‘Creator’, this mix is a terror to bass speakers worldwide. Along with other rave reviews, it was picked as DJ Magazine’s compilation of the month.

Headhunter, Starkey and MC Halfcast

Headhunter

Direct from Bristol - Headhunter. Bristol is widely considered the spiritual home of Dubstep and a city that has distinct take on the sound. With artists such as Pinch, Peverlist, RSD and fellow label mates 2562, Appleblim and Martyn, Headhunter is considered a visionary who’s own sound lies somewhere between what is commonly described as techno and Dubstep. He has long occupied his own particular niche of the Dubstep scene, sitting comfortably between the ultra heavy bass styles of Skream, Benga and his Tempa label mates, and the deeper Berlin influenced Bristol side of the Dubstep coin.

Headhunter first made his mark in Dubstep by starting a label with Drum n Bass producer, Tech Itch in early 2006. Soon after 2 releases were in rotation, Tempa, the genre’s pioneer label soon made the link to sign him exclusively. Hailing from one of Dubstep’s landmark cities, Bristol, he has crafted a unique and distinctive style that reflects the soundsystem-inspired culture of his hometown and does justice to its rich musical history. With 2 Ep’s released on Tempa and a string of remixes of producers such as Martin Buttrich, Brendon Moller, and Antix- the winter of 2008 will saw Headhunter release his long anticipated debut album on Tempa titled Nomad which was widely considered as one of the genres albums of the year.

Starkey is co-owner of Slit Jockey Records and a member of the Seclusiasis and Trouble and Bass crews. In 2005, Starkey won both the North American and Mid-Atlantic Laptop Battles, in Seattle and Washington D.C. respectively. He was also featured in the Philadelphia City Paper’s 2005 Spring Music Issue and awarded the Choice Award for “Best UK Grime DJ in Philly along with Dev79. Following this success stateside Starkey was selected by Vex’d as one of seven new DJs for Radio 1’s Mary Anne Hobbes’ Dubstep elite ‘Generation Bass’ special and was the only non-UK DJ to be chosen.

Following up his 2006 debut on Werk Discs, “Local Headlines, Starkey’s latest album “Ephemeral Exhibits dropped last year on the world famous Planet Mu label. In the past 2 years, Starkey has had a string of vinyl, CD and digital releases on labels such as Peace-Off/Ruff (France), Nonclassical (UK), Dead Homies (US), Starksound/Rag&Bone (UK), Offshore (US) and LoDubs (US), Zombydub (UK), and Dress 2 Sweat (UK).

Halfcast

Joining Starkey direct from Philly is MC Halfcast. Christopher Cole, better known by many as “Halfcast has been crisscrossing the planet since the tender age of 19. Halfcast has made Philly his home for the last couple of years but has in the past lay down roots and his conscious unhurried flow in London, Sydney, Harlem and New York. Touring Australia and New Zealand in early March with Philly’s street bass king Starkey – expect to hear big things coming from this sought after spit kicker.

Halfcast along with Starkey is the lead vocalist for Philadelphia’s electronic outfit Aunt Jessica. The band has released a full length record in 2006 entitled “Knowing Someone’s There off Rope-a-Dope records. In 2007 Halfcast also released an EP on the Dub Consiracy label with longtime collaborator DJ Semper-Fi. Headhunter

March 13, 200910:00 pm

Headhunter first made his mark in Dubstep by starting a label with Drum n Bass producer, Tech Itch in early 2006. Soon after 2 releases were in rotation, Tempa, the genre’s pioneer label soon made the link to sign him exclusively along side Tempas Benga and Skream.

Hailing from one of dubstep’s landmark cities; Bristol, he’s crafted a unique and distinctive style that reflects the soundsystem-inspired culture of his hometown and does justice to its rich musical history. With 2 Ep’s released on Tempa and a string of remixes of producers such as Martin Buttrich, Brendon Moller, and Antix- the winter of ‘08 saw Headhunter focus on the anticipated release of his album on Tempa, as well as forthcoming collaborations and remixes with Drum N Bass’s Kryptic Minds and Leon Switch.

“Nomad Headhunters absolutely superb debut long player-long occupied his own particular nich of the dubstep scene, sitting comfortably between the ultra heavy bass styles of Skream, Benga and his Tempa stablemates, and the deeper Berlin influenced Bristol side of the dubstep coin.

The LP follows an interesting sequence of developments within dubstep over the past three years, with technoid transmissions from the likes of Appleblim, Peverelist and 2562 infiltrating dubstep with increased frequency. Striking a balance between austere futurism and engagingly emotive music, this inventive debut evokes the tone of deep techno, without descending into sheer mimicry. Headhunter treads a distinct path that takes his influences, grinds them up and spits out mutant, idiosyncratic formsthe result is a stunningly cohesive slab of post-garage hybridisation.

One of dubstep’s most revered producer/DJs, Headhunter is thought of as a prominent rising star in the scene and as such is a regular headline DJ at venues including Ministry of Sound, The End (London), and cornerstone dubstep nights FWD>> and Subloaded.

RSD

March 19, 200910:00 pm

RSD, perhaps better known as Bristol bass and drum music stalwart Rob Smith (one half of
respected production duo Smith and Mighty), has been pushing bass heavy rhythms
for more than two decades.

Under the moniker RSD, Rob Smith produces fresh, innovative bass music that
simultaneously pays dues to his deep soundsystem roots while pushing things ever forward.
He remains firmly at the forefront of Bristol’s endlessly inventive music scene.

With a staggering discography and a range of projects encompassing dub, drum and bass,
2-step and dubstep, Rob Smith has has his finger squarely on the bass-pulse. From his
musical beginnings playing guitar in local roots reggae band Restriction, Rob’s music has
always had a strong dub aesthetic. Forming the, now legendary, production duo Smith and
Mighty with collaborator Ray Mighty in 1987, the pair’s early releases on the Three Stripe
label were influential in laying the groundwork for both the trip hop and jungle scenes for
which Bristol would become renowned. A period of chart success and major label
involvement in the early nineties was followed by a return to their underground roots
for Smith and Mighty. During this time they worked with Peter D. Rose to release
groundbreaking music on their More Rockers imprint. Rob Smith also went on to collaborate
with local roots reggae producers Henry & Louis. This fruitful relationship culminated in
2001 with the release of the fantastic, yet criminally overlooked ‘Time Will Tell’ LP.

Smith and Mighty’s addictive 2002 jump-up vocal cut “B-line fi blow” featuring Niji 40 may
still be firmly lodged in many listeners’ brains.

Rob Smith has found a new home in 2009, as RSD, comfortably adapting to the rolling, subheavy
rhythms of dubstep. With releases on respected labels including Punch Drunk, Earwax
and Tectonic, RSD’s sound is typified by impossibly heavy soundsystem-testing sub-lines
and junglist dub breaks. The irresistible energy of tunes such as 2007’s infectious breaky
roller “Pretty Bright Lights”, 2008’s bubbling summer-vibed “Speakerbox” and the speaker
destroying dread-fuelled stepper “Jahway” has rapidly cemented them as anthems.

An experienced, effortless and exhilirating DJ and selector, RSD’s New Zealand shows are
not to be missed.

Strictly138 are also proud to welcome the mighty OoGuN back to Wellington. OoGuN will be loaded with fresh jumbo-weight dubs to celebrate the launch of his Drunk Elephant Sound Aoteroa Record Label - prepare to be trampled!

Joint Forces

March 20, 200910:00 pm

FIRST TIME IN AUCKLAND!

WITH OPTIMUS GRYME, FUTURE ONE & MS CURIOUS

Joint Forces are a Dubstep collective made up of Dj/Producers Mysterious D, Chewie and Soul Provider.
Originally started by long-time Drum’n’Bass producer Mysterious D and UK’s Dj Chewie in early 2008, Joint Forces quickly caught the eye of the international Dubstep community with their dancefloor orientated, bass driven, uniquely distinctive sounding beats.
With an emphasis placed on the more hyper, party-style side of Dubstep, it wasn’t long before the record label offers started to come in. In a matter of months of finishing their first round of tunes, Joint Forces had signed to four different labels from the UK, USA and Germany.
Soon after that came the one like Soul Provider, and Joint Forces as it is now was formed.

In October 2008, Joint Forces released their first two tracks, “Turn Me Up and “Nimbus Daze, on Stupid Fly Records (USA). These remained in the top three downloaded Dubstep tracks on Digi-Tunes for over three weeks!
In late December 2008, Joint Forces released their second round of tracks, with the much awaited “Yes Man and “Joe Grizzly on Abducted Dub Records (USA).
On January 5th 2009, their track “Sasquatch was released on Dub Frequency Recordings (UK).
Joint Forces have also recently signed a deal with German label Dubstep Division Recordings for a 12 release including a track with well known vocalists Daddy Freddy and Don Goliath.

Joint Forces tracks are being played out by heavyweight Dj’s in the Dubstep scene including Babylon System, Nick Argon, DZ, TRG, Skrewface and many more as well as getting radio play on stations such as SubFM (UK), RinseFM (UK) and on the highly rated Dubstepers Delight show on SensiFM in Sweden.

Having just finished a round of remixes for some high profile Dubstep artists, as well as a track for NZ Dub-reggae legends Dubwize, (due for vinyl release on Stupid Fly Records) Joint Forces are set to take the Dubstep scene by storm, both here in NZ and overseas.
