J Day

May 2, 20094:20 pm

International J Day is always the first Saturday in May, so this year that means Saturday 2nd May. NORML is organising events in Auckland, Hamilton, Wellington, Christchurch and Dunedin. Come along and show your support for repealing cannabis prohibition.

We need your support now more than ever. This year the UN is reviewing it’s anti-drug conventions and the signs are looking promising. Here in New Zealand the Law Commission, an independent non-political body charged with fixing broken laws, has turned it’s attention to the Misuse of Drugs Act.

J Day is part of the Global Marijuana March, happening in over 200 cities around the world.

Show your support for cannabis law reform!

All events run from High Noon to 4:20. Most will feature music, speakers and market stalls. J Day is free, but because of the nature of what we are trying to achieve, J Day is an R18 event. Please, no alcohol.

After hearing Caspa playing ‘Freakshow’ at FWD, Youngsta then contacted The Others to sign it to the legendary Tempa, sharing wax with the likes of Benga, Rusko & Martyn to make up Vol.4 of the Tempa Allstars series.

aka Ali Harley and Harry Bretherton are one of NewZealands most versatile Drum and bass outfits having been based in Nelson, Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch throughout the last 5 years, producing many forms of drum and bass and dub their sound is distinct but ever changing. Ali_ growing up in nelson, being involved with The Gathering, The Artery, PHAT and other legendary outdoor party’s, mixing psi-trance and techno. Harry_ growing up in The Peak District(England) then onto Auckland, playing random warehouse and outdoor party’s, scratching and juggling hip-hop, both hailing from complete opposite ends of the world both physically and musically. Being brought together by drum and bass (Klute:) in 2003, Nelson quickly became home to Organikismness and the PHAT club became their stomping ground, and what was 2 djs back2back (playing records etc) soon became NewZealands first drum and bass dj act to play only their own material. Having now played along side: Klute, Black Sun Empire, Goldie, D bridge, Micky Finn and Aphrodite, Digital, Amit, Outrage, Raiden and Robyn Chaos, Andy C, Noisia and toured with Pendulum(live), Spor, Teebee, Future Prophecies, Roni size and mc Dynamite to name a few, their performances and thus their production have stood next to some of the worlds best. 2008 has already been a massive year with consistent touring, their first mix cd featuring 28 of their own tunes being released on their own label Evasive maneuvers, their first digital release on Bassweight recordings, and with their debut album “touché due for release any day now its not looking like slowing down, what has been one of drum and bass’s best kept secrets is about to be told far and wide.

Quarter life crisis

May 28, 20099:00 pm

Its my birthday, so come on down and get your drunk on and help me celebrate my 25th, that is - my Quarter Life Crisis. Instead of sports cars and 18 year olds, I’m gonna get my drink on and listen to some proper dubstep.

Lineup:
8pm: Munk [Grime City, San Francisco USA]
9pm Jason George (Classic UK Garage, Sublow, UK Hip Hop) [The Dubstep Weekly, Subscape]
10pm MikeE (Dubstep, Grime)
11pm Jeffsta (Dubstep)
12pm Jason Howson (Dubstep) [Silk Cuts, Wheel]
1am MsCurious (Dubstep)
+ more TBC.

Jason George:
Although Jason’s history is spread across multiple genres, continents, clubs and raves, he is still one of the few that can lay down a slamming set of beats from any of his chosen genres, any given time, or place. In 2000 he moved into garage, 2 step and breaks, from a love of tribal house in the late 90’s - but his interest in broken drum patterns soon grew and he has been integrating dubstep into his sets since 2003. During the recent growth of dubstep in Auckland, Jason’s existing catalogue hasn’t gone unnoticed and his drive for the phatest beats and deepest basslines will have the dancefloor shuffling for more, while they’re dished sound pressure servings one dubplate after the other!
http://www.myspace.com/jasongeorge

Jason Howson:
It was while watching drum and bass DJ Grooverider blending songs together on tour in the early 1990s that Jason Howson knew he wanted to become a DJ. Shortly after, he bought himself a set of turntables and began spinning records. And he hasn’t stopped. Over the years, Howson has genre swapped between hip hop, drum and bass, 2 step, UK garage and dubstep. Although he says whatever it is he’s playing, there is always heavy bass,

These days, Howson fills his days DJing at local club nights (one of which, Wheel, he also organises), supporting for international acts, and running Beat Merchants, a one-stop record shop in Auckland that covers dubstep, drum and bass, hip hop and reggae. You can hear him Wednesday nights on the Silk Cuts in Session show on George FM where he treats listeners to the freshest tunes from the musical worlds of UK garage, 2 Step, hip hop, drum and bass and dubstep.

Goth Trad

May 30, 200910:00 pm

While “Mad Rave” has started to resonate with scenes worldwide in the last
few years, from dubstep to drum’n'bass, breakcore to dub, it’s been a long
journey already for Goth Trad. Since first dabbling in production back in
the late 90s, he’s released three albums, appeared on many compilations
and remix projects, and released another three albums as part of Rebel
Familia, a collaboration project with legendary reggae bassist Takeshi
“Heavy” Akimoto. He’s also toured Europe four times and has been playing
regularly up and down Japan, solo and with Rebel Familia, for the best
part of the last five years. His live work has only intensified since the
release of his last album, and you’ll as easily find him playing at a
drum’n'bass rave as you will a breakcore event, a reggae gig or his own
monthly dubstep and grime night in Tokyo, Back To Chill. The diverse
appeal of his music and live shows is reflected in the range of artists
he’s played alongside in the last few years: The Mars Volta, Don Letts,
The Bug, DJ Krush, Limewax, Toshinori Kondo, Mike Ladd, Bong Ra, Buck 65,
Zinc, Doc Scott, Skream, Mala and Iration Steppas.

And so, with the increasing interest in his work outside of Japan,
following his debut releases on UK labels Deep Medi Music, Skud Records
and recently Soul Jazz, and having recently toured Japan with Kode9 ,The
Bug and playing the legendary DMZ night at Mass in Brixton as recently as
last month, Goth-Trad brings his much talked about live show to Christchurch for
the first time. With support from a diverse range of cracking local DJs,
the SUBTLE crew again delivers the goods with the freshest sounds in
electronic music today. Another one not to be missed…

Bio:
Established January of this year Real Big Groove was formed to bring the darker side of dance music back to the forefront in Wellington. Although our main focus is on dark DnB & Dubstep we are keen to give a space for all bass heavy music in Welly. We currently run two nights dedicated to bass, Dubstate - Friday Dubstep sessions at Garden club [10pm til late] & Freebass - Bass heavy Tuesdays at Hole in the Wall [7pm til late], in the tradition of the old DnB Tuesdays when it used to be known as Valve.

We welcome any bass focused musicians to contact us if you are keen on playing on either night or at the next RBG gig as theres always guest spots open.
