Kode 9

July 2, 20099:30 pm

The absolute evolutionary godfather of dubstep, KODE 9 is on his way to Aotearoa to take everything you thought you knew about the sound and flip it around, bringing you symphony of sonic seduction!

KODE 9 has nurtured dubstep music since day one, shaping its definition through founding the record label HYPERDUB. This imprint has given artists BURIAL, ZOMBY, IKONIKA, FLYING LOTUS and KODE 9 the strong voices needed to deliver an even stronger message: music that drowns out your expectations and resonates with your emotions.

In 2006 the underground music world was astounded by Burials groundbreaking debut, which was awarded ‘Album of the Year’ status by THE WIRE magazine, and described as an absurdly addictive sonic opiate - a feat that would not have been possible without Kode’s support. Out of this success, the HYPERDUB label has brought many ruff and revolutionary artists to our consciousness, and is refusing to adopt a formulaic approach to the sound.

Kode’s critically acclaimed debut album, ‘MEMORIES OF THE FUTURE’ featuring SPACEAPE, has also been at the forefront of his exploratory approach, establishing his role as an artist, author, and lecturer on audio culture. It’s an interest that spans from grime emcees waging war with a mic to the US army waging war with advanced sonic weaponry. “It’s about the use of sound as a weapon. It’s about collective grass roots, tactical media, pirate radio, network culture, DIY media…â€?, an attitude that will ensure a night of auditory adventure.

KODE 9′S WELLINGTON DEBUT is your opportunity to witness an evocative artist that “vibrates the bits that other djs don’t reach”. The Strictly138 crew, KAPS, P-VANS, STEPPA-D, THIEF and EXCELLE will support the night with a selection of explosive New Zealand dubplates for the courageous dancefloor soldiers. Nothing else matters but this night!

Get hyped for the HYPERDUB and get ya HYPERDANCE on!

Sick Cycle & Urban Terror Unit - 2009 Corrosive Noise Tour

July 10, 2009 10:00 pmtoAugust 1, 2009 10:00 pm

Fri 10 July - Double Happy, Christchurch
Fri 17 July - Phatclub, Nelson
Sat 25 July - Bath St, Dunedin
Sat 01 Aug - Subculture, Queenstown

SICK CYCLE

Sick Cycle began as two separate producers, Michael West and Levon Maeder, each on their own path in music. They both attended the same school and the same audio engeering course. Michael first released “Meditation” under the name Sick Cycle in 2006, playing live on his MicroKorg Synth & Acoustic Guitar and producing the drums on PC. Michael and Levon finally collaborated together in 2007, and havent looked back since.
Sick Cycle’s dubstep assault began in 2008, with little knowledge. To their amazement, Rottun Recordings, run by Canadian producer “Excision”, signed the tunes that came forth. “Concept” is out this year as a 12″ Vinyl on Rottun Recordings, as well as “Hive Mind” and “Tweak Frenzy” as MP3 downloads via beatport.com. For more information please visit www.rottunrecordings.com
This year for Sick Cycle involves their second CD album with some special guest remixes, and their second New Zealand Tour - this time with Dunedins best dj crew “Urban Terror Unit”. Last years tour saw Sick Cycle performing alongside melbourne based producer Nasty Genius, and the results were outstanding.
Sick Cycle also run “Corrosive Noise” dark music events in New Zealand. The events feature New Zealand musicians & producers who focus primarily on darker destructive music. Christchurch events are held at Double Happy in the central city, and in the past have featured artists like Nanotek, Organikismness, Kilotone, Habit, The Facecutters, & Urban Terror Unit. Keep an eye out for these events as they only happen two or three times a year.
There is no doubt there are big things on the horizon for Sick Cycle, they are passionate about what they do and are dedicated to noise.

Mark Pritchard

MARK PRITCHARD / HARMONIC 313 / call him what you will. British native MARK PRITCHARD has been producing groundbreaking tunes across the electronic music spectrum since the early 1990s, and has chewed through more monikers than you can shake a stick at. One half of legendary outfits Global Communication and Jedi Knights (both with the infamous Tom Middleton), these days he mainly pushes the HARMONIC 313 barrow, and what an assortment of bassline goodies he puts in it! With recent releases on a checklist of chic labels (Warp Records, Ubiquity, Sonar Kollektiv, Soul Jazz) plus the much-hyped Wind It Up ft Om’Mas Keith about to drop on Hyperdub, he still manages to push his sound in new directions, and keep a stranglehold on critical acclaim. Magic! Do not miss the dancefloor legend in action.

BOOOF has played more rammed gigs than he’s had hot dinners. He takes this shit very seriously. Nuff said.

UNDERTOW is the dirty south’s bassweight specialist, well renowned locally and nationally for his next-level beats and flawless sets. This is no light-weight business – all UNDERTOW performances come with a stamp of quality that can only be gained through years of testing dubs on the most packed dancefloors Dunedin and New Zealand have to offer. Taking a break from crafting his long-awaited debut EP, UNDERTOW will be helming a set that will make wannabe-djs pack up their CD wallets and head for the hills. You have been warned.

WOOSH lives and breathes music. Growing up surrounded by records, his productions and collaborations are infused with a soulful depth and maturity, something which has garnered him international reknown amongst those in the know. Expect a set of iconic eclecticism, blended together with the deft touch of one of the few people in Dunedin who knows a soundsystem inside-out. Class is in session kids.
