AQUATIC LAB SESSIONS VOL.1

FARJ+PAUL [AQUATIC LAB RECORDS / AUS]
Aquatic Lab was established in 2006 by the pioneers of the Australian dubstep and garage movement, DJ’s Farj and Paul Fraser. From the onset, Farj & Paul set out to create a unique proposition - a quality record label managed from Australia but with a global vision from day one. Currently focused on the broad and emerging sounds called dubstep, Aquatic Lab as the name suggests is an experimental environment for tomorrow’s big name artists.

P-VANS [AQUATIC LAB RECORDS / STRICTLY138 / BASSWEIGHT]
Since joining the Strictly138 crew in early 2006 Wellington based New Zealand DJ/Producer P-Vans has placed a major emphasis on crafting his own deep bass driven sound that echo’s his love of dark early Dubstep roots while pushing things forward with a fresh New Zealand vibe. P-Vans first ever 12″ vinyl release “Wasps” drops on Aquatic Lab Sessions vol.1 July 17th along side tracks by Caspa, Rusko, Cotti, Zed Bias and Seven.

EMALKAY
Big, bad, heavy: three simple words to describe the sound of one of dubstep’s most complex artists, Emalkay. Certainly no stranger when it comes to playing left field, Emalkay takes his own innovative style to a whole other level! With support from the likes of Amon Tobin, FreQ Nasty and Mary Anne Hobbs - as well as prominent dubsteppers Benga and N-type, Emalkay has proven himself to be one of the most influential pioneers of the heavier dubstep sound.

With inital support in the form of grime veteran Plastician, “Birmingham’s finest” Emalkay - pronounced em-al-kay - gained the attention of South London based record label Boka Records, with the warped, future bass drones and epic strings of Gut Feeling in August 2006. Continuing the success, Testing The Waters EP was released later that year followed by Monsters in June 07.

The revolutionary sound of Mecha, released in the fall of 07, gained Emalkay support from the likes of Radio 1 DJ Mary Anne Hobbs and breakbeat pioneer FreQ Nasty, as well as many of the leading figures of the current dubstep scene. It seemed Emalkay’s own potential as a pivotal dubstep artist was finally being realised. His final release on Boka Records was the reggae influenced My Story in April 08.

In the fall of 08, Emalkay produced Explicit - a tune that immediately captured the interest of such prominent dubsteppers as Benga and received major support from acts such as The Scratch Perverts and drum and bass duo Chase and Status. After being approached by Caspa however, Explicit was finally released on the Dub Police label in February 09 after much anticipation.

Warrior Sound

August 14, 200910:00 pm

Top local DJs, quality DUBSTEP beats and hype party madness, all at Auckland’s premier underground music venue.

DJ BIOs:

FROSTYBOY is a man with a mission: to bring the best DUBSTEP DJs from around the globe to NZ fans. He established his tour label DIRTYCASH ENTERTAINMENT in 2007 to meet that goal, and with BEAT MERCHANTS has organised the majority of international dubstep tours to these shores. A long time producer, his dubs are often heard on the SILK CUTS radio show on George FM. “Tropical Kids” was cut to dub at TRANSITION and became an instant classic, with the VIP version featured on the EVERY DAY DUBS compilation. FROSTY is working on a “LIVE” project called FUTURE BASS MUSIC which he hopes to debut at WARRIOR SOUND. http://www.myspace.com/dirtycashrecordings

GRIND has cemented himself as one of NZ’s champion DUBSTEP DJs. Representing DIRTYCASH & BEAT MERCHANTS he’s supported heavyweight internationals such as BENGA, CASPA, N-TYPE, LOEFAH, DIGITAL MYSTIKS, TES LA ROK, DISTANCE as well as PINCH (for DUBSTEP ALLIANCE). Grind rates spinning records back-to-back with MALA as an all-time DJing honour and highlight. Recently one of the tour DJs of choice for the OPTIMUS GRYME album release tour, he’s also in demand in the D&B and breaks scenes having played gigs for SUBTRONIX, CYANIDE RECORDINGS, SAMURAI MUSIC and TAG PROMOTIONS. http://www.myspace.com/dj.grind

LOWQUID was always keen on the bass heavy, and when dubstep came along he found himself buying vinyl from BEAT MERCHANTS and quickly building up a solid collection. Before long he was playing out regularly- SUBSCAPE nights at SUPPER CLUB, WHEEL at FU, DUBSTEP ALLIANCE at RISING SUN and most recently GUTTER MUSIC at CLUB 324. Lowquid teamed up with SEEKA for the DUB CONSULTANTS radio show on K-FM and recently took over his residency at the GINGER MINX playing lounge style dubstep. He also touches on experimental hiphop and other genres, making him the ideal choice to warm things up for the legendary KODE-9 at ZEN this year.

RHYAS acquired a love for JUNGLE and DRUM N BASS music at an early age and over the last decade has been responsible for many deep and devastating sets around the country… and now for the first time he’s going to smash down an exclusive 100% DUBSTEP set. His incredible versatility behind the decks and appreciation of the full spectrum of drum ‘n’ bass has seen Rhyas support international and local artists such as DJ BAILEY, MATRIX, FIERCE, MICKEY FINN, BIG BUD, OUTRAGE, DOC SCOTT, MARCUS INTALEX, LTJ BUKEM & MC CONRAD, DANNY BYRD, BROOKES BROS, SHAPESHIFTER, CONCORD DAWN and THE UPBEATS.

PHIL O helped start the DUBSTEP scene in Dunedin, playing and promoting alongside UNDERTOW. Together they hosted the likes of N-TYPE, LOEFAH, HEADHUNTER, CHEF and many more from abroad and NZ. On top of this Phil ran the premier radio show ‘DUDSTEP ALL-STARS’ on Radio-One. Now back in Auckland, Phil O has been kept busy with his brand new show on BOOSH FM and regular club appearances at CLUB 324 and FU where he has smashed up crowds with his super-tight mixing style. In the studio, his beats have gained the attention of top locals, making him one to watch in the NZ production scene. http://www.soundcloud.com/phil-o

Dubtub monthly

August 14, 200910:00 pm

Cheers all who came along last time and made the première Dubtub monthly an epic event. As promised were going to be rattling your bones with thick bass every month .. this is the next instalment
——
We at DubTub are never completely happy with the sound at dubstep gigs.. it requires so much more bottom end than other genre’s… if you came to the last dubtub you would have noticed the overhead wall of speakers and subs tuned to perfection and billowing out low levels that ended up shaking pictures off walls.

That… is what we like…

Again we are going to pack a ridiculous amount of sound into Galatos basement creating the ultimate dubstep sound.

To help us with the dubstep sound we have some of Auckland’s dopest DJ’s

On the 1’s and 2’s we have:

ZdotT -From the hard streets of Grey Lynn is known for dropping dubstep so filthy it shouldn’t be legal

DJ VJ - who’s been playing around everywhere latly making a name for himself by pulling out tight set after tight set

Apex - Just back from Melbourne where he had a guest spot of KissFM. Also a talented producer Apex will have some special treats in store

Jefro - frequently playing at Low Roller gigs and around town will keep things flowing with deep record bag of goodies

Tryptamine - The Dubtub shows own Tryptamine, just back from Wellington playing at Bass Oasis has some new dubs from artists around New Zealand and different parts of the globe. His tune selection is 6months in advance and is sure to turn into a set to remember
