Wheel

September 4, 200910:00 pm

Early last year, a trio of singles released on Kode 9’s Hyperdub label announced the arrival of the off-kilter ‘wonky’ non-dubstep sound that would subsequently dominate dancefloors in ‘08. The purple sound weigh’s heavily on grime, Dipset, video games and G-funk.

Joker (a leading proponent) said he imagines the music in his head first as a picture, using a landscape of a purple-tinted sea as an example. It’s this ‘purple’ aesthetic - squelchy, syrupy sounds vibrant with colour and soul - that binds his tracks - Funk remodeled for a generation that thirsts for bassweight and 140BPM but still remembers caning Death Row records at school.

Line up: Frosty, Lowquid, MikeE, Jeffro and Zing

Dubtub

September 4, 200910:00 pm

Cheers for all who came to Dubtub #2 in Aug.. the vibe was wicked.

As promised its just going to land on your door step again .. and again .. and again..

Septembers line up and sound rig are looking good for another good night.

Last month we had 10x 18 sub bins jammed into the basement… September will not be a let down it will be as heavy.. if not heavier, we are working on getting in some chesty mids for more thump

This month we are showcasing some of Auckland’s MC talent with Rugged Techniques on the mic. Lately has been living in the studio working on his Debut album witch is hopefully dropping before the end of ’09 . Were lucky enough to be able to tear him away from the studio mic and let him cut loose at ‘Dubtub September’

On the tunes this month we have:

Flex (Strictly 138) – A master of multiple genre’s, his musical taste forever changing and evolving. Flex is from the Strictly 138 crew who were one of the first dubstep movements in New Zealand… a seasoned DJ and producer Flex has a tight set and will be sure to get you moving double time

Frosty (BooshFm)(Dirty Cash) – Frosty’s sets are as tight as ever, heavily into his music production hes starting to incorporate the Studio with his DJ sets by using Abelton live on stage spicing things up 10 fold

Jason George –An OG in the club scene, if he hasn’t rocked you before, your in for a treat. Jason George is known for controlling crowds with his tune selection and tight mixing skills on the 1’s and 2’s. A set not to be missed on the the Dubtub system!!!!

Tryptamine (Dubtub)(Twenty Twelve Rec)(BooshFm) – Dubtubs resident DJ will start and end the Dubtub night. He will be beginning the night with some dancehall dubs and true ragga tunes that put the dub in to dubstep. These will help you enjoy those first cold beers at the bar. Then as the night and energy progress’s he will finish the night with some monster tracks

Rugged Techniques (UK) (Strictly 138) - As mentioned above.. the one who will guide us through the night with his bubbling on the mic is Rugged Tech. Get ready for some twisted tongues.

From all at the Dubtub Team thanks again for coming down last time.. Invite your friends and come on down for some good times

Dub is a Battlefield

For the first time, we set Dubstep head-to-head with Dancehall in a sound clash style.

Top crews from each genre battle it out in ever-shortening sets, until they’re going song-for-song, trying to persuade the crowd to pick a side. Our two top-shotta MC’s bring the hype, and at the end of the night the crowd votes a winner.

Who’s going to seize the night? Who’s got the props? Who’s got the best Dubs? This is where the crowd decides.

LD vs Antiserum

September 26, 200910:00 pm

For those that don’t know, be prepared to experience something fresh and untapped from South Londonite Leon Day, aka L.D.

The 24 year-old first heard the sounds of jungle at the age of nine through exposure to mix-tapes brought home by his older brother, it was only a matter of time before he was introduced to turntables. It was this that inspired him to go to college and take up music technology, yet it was a painting and decorating job that actually got him his first break, leading him through the door of Transition Studio (responsible for pressing the majority of dubplates amongst the scenes instigators) in 2003…
Watching and learning as a vast array of clients from Darren Jay to Natasha Bedingfield came through the doors, Leon learnt the art and science of sound, mastering under owner Jason’s careful mentorship, cutting his teeth on 10â€? dubplates for dubstep producers and DJ’s Distance, N-Type and Digital Mystikz, eventually graduating to12â€? dubs and mastering. From this vantage point, he could view the evolution of dubstep through regular exposure to the mutating sounds coming from the constant flow of artists coming to get their dubs cut.
It was during one of these sessions that Mala (DMZ), first heard L.D’s first original production Clock Watching and instantly charted it. From here Jason(Transition) resurrected his old Ringo record label and released it, with Skream’s mix of Assumptions on the flip. Once firmly on the dubstep map, things began to move. His next production, Swing Dat Skirt, created in January 2007 with it’s rifle fire rhythms, filtered key lines and funky bass drop, garnered strong support from DJ Chef and N-Type on Rinse FM.
It takes a certain calibre of person to get their first dubstep DJ date at the biggest party of 2007. Going back to back with DJ Chef at DMZ 2nd Birthday in London was a baptism of fire, he says. “I saw the line up and it made it worse. Playing alongside Kode 9, Skream, Hatcha, Benga and Plastician, LD showed little fear, opening with one of the most insane mixes of the night, still talked about in dubstep chat rooms now.
LD’s sound is his own. Drawing on his roots, you can hear the drum pan sounds of Jamaica resonating throughout, flashes of Soca drums, subtle tribal nuances, and the ghost of Jungle reverberating in the warm, pulsating sub bass. His recent works include releases on the Uber-eclectic Hyperdub and remix work on some UK funky business..

Antiserum is one of San Franciscoʼ s most innovative and well respected Dubstep prooducers and DJs. His productions as Antiserum, half of OSC and his many bass-heavy remixes have consistently delivered high quality, next-level bass music. Combining deep dubby skankers with the gnarly dark stormy SF sound that Antiserum and Babylon System have brought to the world, an Antiserum DJ set is an unforgettable experience that makes any PA shake and quake.
Expect pure bass music and the pulverising sound that youʼll have heard on his many releases on forward looking labels like MODE (“Skullf*cked), Steps in Time (“Rockerʼs Delight), WAR (“Dreadlock) Argon (“California Style), Narco HZ (“The Tide) and many more.

Nero

September 30, 200910:00 pm

NERO have become a big name in both the Drum and Bass and Dubstep scenes, often fusing both styles of music in their DJ sets. With massive releases in both D’n’B and Dubstep these boys cross the genres with ease, always keeping the same distinctive “Nero vibe concentrating on the party.
With several huge tunes out already including the 12 “Energy and Workout rocking raves all over the world and on the dubstep side their remix of the Street’s anthem “Blinded By The Lights taking the Dubstep world by storm. Not to mention their other heavyweight release and slew of forthcoming tunes from both themselves and the biggest names in D’n’B and Dubstep. Nero are set to straight destroy Bath St.
