DJ Pinch

April 1, 201010:00 pm

DUBSTEP CENTRAL & DOUBLE HAPPY PRESENTS:

DJ PINCH

Having brought dubstep music to Bristol in early 2004 with his Context and later Subloaded nights, Rob Ellis, aka Pinch, worked hard to develop the sound in his home town and the city has flourished as a result of his inputs. Five years on and he can lay claim to the title ‘Bristol’s Godfather of Dubstep’ as he is often dubbed by journalists – his original music productions being highly sought after, even finding their way to the silver screen (‘War Dub’ featured in Universal Pictures’ ‘Children Of Men’).
Pinch runs the successful Tectonic imprint, alongside Earwax and looks after Kapsize and Caravan on behalf of artists Joker and October. Starting in 2005 Tectonic quickly grew in reputation to become known as one of the most reliable labels alongside Hyperdub, DMZ and Tempa. Releasing reputed artists such as Loefah, Skream and bringing new signings such as Cyrus and 2562 to the table, Tectonic is also known as the main home for Pinch’s own productions, delivering the widely acclaimed ‘Underwater Dancehall’ LP in late 2007. The LP received huge support from the world press receiving 9/10 in Vice, 5/5 in Mixmag and album of the month in DJ Mag – to name a few.
Pinch’s first solo release came in 2006 with ‘Qawwali’ on the highly respected Planet Mu label and received critical acclaim.
Boomkat.com, for instance said, “For us, this is the most flawless excursion from Planet Mu to date - and without doubt one of the deepest, most involving and subtle dubstep twelves released in the last 6 years.”
Pinch went on to release the acclaimed ‘Punisher’ later that year, as well as ‘Pepper Spray’ in 2007 and ‘Attack Of The Giant Killer Robot Spiders’ earlier this year. Similarly he released leading tracks on Soul Jazz’s Box Of Dub 2 compilation in 2007, with a follow up single in 2008, ‘Chamber Dub’. His productions have received radio plays on many stations across the globe, including regular coverage on BBC Radio One shows such as Mary-Anne Hobbs’ Breezeblock and Rob Da Bank – even providing Radio One with exclusively prepared guest DJ mixes.
As a result of his production skills Pinch has been asked to remix high calibre artists such as Horace Andy & Ashley Beedle (for Berlin based !K7), the great Qawwali vocal legend Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (who, it is speculated, has sold as many records as Elvis Presley!) courtesy of San Francisco based Six Degrees and London based electro-pop outfit Simean Mobile Disco for Wichita Records.
His reputation has taken him across the globe over the last few years, having played across most of Europe, as well as Russia, Japan, Australia, New Zealand and even China (being the 2nd UK dubstep artist ever to be invited to play in China).
Pinch is regarded by his fans and peers alike as one of the main players in dubstep – always pushing boundaries forward both by means of his original productions and in his cutting edge dubplate led DJ sets.

Easter Weekender

March 31, 2010 10:00 pmtoApril 4, 2010 10:00 pm

Easter. It’s big right? A few days off and a lovely trip to the Royal Easter show? I mean honestly, that candy floss is next level. Chocolate eggs all up in your grill. And who doesn’t love a good Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday?
This year though, there is something extra special to look forward to. Some of the biggest electronic acts in the world, from across the bass heavy spectrum, coming down to our little corner of the world for one set of New Zealand shows.

Featuring for the first time in NZ - 6 DNB & Dubstep Internationals for the low early-bird price of $29.90 +BF:
Matrix (UK)
Futurebound (UK)
Trolley Snatcha (UK)
Noah D (USA)
ShockOne & Phetsta (AUS) (Live AV Set)

With a lineup like that - this event is a guaranteed sell out - make sure you get your tickets now!

Matrix & Futurebound (UK) (Viper Recordings, Metro Recordings)
http://www.myspace.com/matrixandfuturebound
Having both pursued long, successful solo careers, Matrix & Futurebound need no introduction to drum & bass fans around the world. Both run their own labels -Matrix with Metro Recordings, and Futurebound with the Viper Recordings imprint. With releases on virtually every top label from Virus and Ram to Moving Shadow and Hospital Records, Matrix and Futurebound’s individual accomplishments speak for themselves. Their first collaborative effort, 2005’s ‘Strength 2 Strength’, formed the groundwork for what would later turn into the release of their massive debut album, ‘Universal Truth’. With huge support from the top DJs in drum & bass and the likes of Radio 1’s Annie Mac, Zane Lowe & Pete Tong, Universal Truth went on to become one of the most successful drum & bass albums to date.

The result was a sublime combination of straight up dance floor devastation and soulful futurism demonstrating perfectly why Matrix and Futurebound have found themselves firmly at the forefront of the drum and bass scene.

Matrix & Futurebound teamed up again later in 2007 for the release of their gargantuan remix of Nu:tone’s ‘System’. The tune became an instant classic, dropped by the likes of Andy C to Annie Mac and everyone in between, ‘System’ has become a permanent fixture in DJ bags all over the world ever since. Following this they then went on to remix Justin Timberlake’s ‘Love Stoned’ for the remix single release.

Into 2008 and there was no letting up as Matrix & Futurebound then released their first follow up single to ‘Universal Truth’, with 2008’s ‘Womb’ / ‘Family’ (Nu:tone & Logistics RMX). Both artists kept their fingers firmly on the pulse with various other projects. Matrix, in collaboration with Shimon, released ‘Slipstream’ / ‘Dirty 5th’ on Shimon’s newly formed AudioPorn Records, while Futurebound teamed up with the Brookes Brothers to create the soulful anthem ‘Dawn Treader’, released on Breakbeat Kaos.

Futurebound’s label Viper Recordings has also quickly climbed the ladder as one of the premier drum & bass labels in the scene with releases from new signings ShockOne, Metrik, Brookes Brothers, DC Breaks and Matrix & Futurebound just to name a few.

Moving into 2009 and the success of Matrix & Futurebound’s productions led to many of the biggest labels and artists in the industry to request high profile remixes from the duo, in which Matrix & Futurebound duly obliged, turning tracks by the likes of Moby, Lazee, Snap! & Ian Carey amongst others into DnB killers.

As well as this the duo managed to squeeze another banging release into their ridiculously busy schedule, dropping the dancefloor smasher ‘Shanghai Surprise’, backed with the uplifting vocal vibes of ‘Reflection’.

And to cap the year off perfectly Futurebound pieced together one of the biggest albums of 2009 ‘Acts of Mad Men’ on his seminal Viper recordings label.

‘Acts of Mad Men’ featured many of the scenes high profile players such as Ed Rush & Optical, Brookes Brothers, Nero alongside the whole Viper family Camo & Krooked, ShockOne, Metrik, DC Breaks, Furlonge and Matrix & Futurebound and as well as being championed by the DnB hierarchy was also named Radio 1’s album of the week.

As we enter 2010 Matrix & Futurebound have begun work on their eagerly anticipated second studio album, scheduled for release on the back end of 2010. Other highlights to look out before though is new material from Matrix’s Metro imprint and Futurebound’s remix of Sasha’s trance classic ‘Xpander’ as well as another year of Viper goodness.

Noah D (USA) (Subway, Basshead, Earwax)
http://www.myspace.com/noahd
Noah D is without doubt one of, if not the top, Dubstep producers emerging from the USA. Building his reputation in both the Dubstep and Drum n Bass circles since 2003, he remains highly regarded on both sides of the Atlantic for his musical output which ranges from reggae steppas such as the sold out WAR007 “Police Polizia” to club bangers like his remix of Sukh Knight’s “Diesel not Petrol”. Not far from his musical roots as a master of the Didgereedoo more recently Noah D has gained notable recognition for “Seeeriousss”, as it became 2009’s ‘must have’ plate for the touring DJ.

His music has received consistent radio play on many of the UK’s biggest radio stations including RinseFM, Kiss and BBC’s 1xtra and he has been supported worldwide from DJ’s such as Skream, Dieselboy, DJ Hype, N-Type, Plastician, Bassnectar, Glitch Mob and Benga just to name a few!

Behind the decks this state side steppa commands the dancefloor with his unique blend of beats, relentless energy, and unmistakable attention to detail while in the mix. If you had plans for the Royal Easter Show, cancel them - because USA’s hottest dubstep act hit’s Australia & New Zealand and that mean’s it’s time to get seeeeeriousssss!

Trolley Snatcha (UK) (Dub Police)
www.myspace.com/trolleysnatcha
Since 2009, 22 year old Zack Kemp aka Trolley Snatcha has been carving his way through the ranks of dubstep one stolen shopping trolley at a time. Having taken inspiration from Massive Attack, The Prodigy, Slipknot, Sepeltura, and even the occasional crackheads asking for money on the street – he has come to manufacture heavyweight new school filth so utterly face melting that it has destroyed venues world-wide and sought repeat rewinds from the likes of Skream, Benga, Jakes, Rusko, Dr P, Joker, Chase & Status, 12th Planet and more!

Even before collaborating with Caspa on the infamous “STLO” DP Remix, Trolley Snatcha had taken the world by storm with his chart topping tunes “The Future” and “Scattah” both of which saw releases on London’s heavyweight label Dub Police. With tunes such as “I Don’t Care” and “March of the Mallards” getting serious airtime, and a raft of releases on the way – missing this cutting edge bass machine’s debut performances would be nothing short of an act of retardation!

Fresh faced from touring the far reaches of Israel, Belguim, France, Norway, Holland, and ramming venues like Fabric, Ministry of Sound and the Custard Factory – Trolley Snatcha is now headed to Australia and New Zealand for Easter and unless you’re happy to sit back and watch people’s faces get disfigured by his tunes on YouTube.. you’d better hurry up and secure your place at his next show!

Shock One (AUS) (Viper Recordings)
http://www.myspace.com/shockonemusic
Hailing from Perth the epicenter of the Australasian drum and bass scene, ShockOne aka Karl Thomas is fast becoming one of D&B’s major talents. He writes his music in a sweat box of a studio in an industrial area with air con blasting through a random door. He grew a beard this year which has been very well received.

2009 has seen Shockone come of age with the release of ‘The Shockone EP’, featuring the chart topping ‘Polygon’. This tune received major air play world wide with high rotation play listing on Australia’s Triple J radio and Radio 1’s Annie Mac penning it as ‘The biggest drum and bass tune out’. The EP’s three drum and bass tunes achieved the top 3 spots on beatports drum and bass chart, and ‘Adachigahara’s Theme’ stayed at number 1 on the dubstep chart for over a month. Following this Shockone released his remix of the Brookes Brothers epic ‘Crackdown’ on Viper recordings ‘Acts of Madmen LP’ which was labeled “Album of the Week” on Zane Lowe BBC Radio 1. Shockone’s collaborations with Phetsta, ‘The Sun 2009′ and ‘Cyclones’ have also received high rotation on radio world wide.

2009 also saw Shockone take out “Best Tune of the Year” at the Perth dance music awards for the third year running with ‘Polygon’, as well as best drum and bass dj and best broken beat producer for the second year in a row.

With his tracks being aired frequently by the scenes biggest hitters such as Andy C, Hype, Friction, High Contrast and Matrix + Futurebound - you’ll get to witness first hand what Shockone’s all about during his Easter Weekend New Zealand tour with Phetsta as the duo pair to showcase an exclusive audio-visual performance!

Phetsta (AUS) (Technique Recordings)
http://www.myspace.com/phetstamusic
Phetsta burst onto the Drum & Bass scene in 2005 when he signed exclusively to the legendary Simon Bassline Smith’s imprint Technique Recordings. The Australian producer quickly carved his own sound within the genre with early releases such as Intergalactic and Blur (Mixmag’s tune of the month - May 2006).

In 2007 Phetsta released the acclaimed Congo EP, Knowledge Magazine calling it a “production masterpiece”. The four track extended player cracked the top ten on BBC Radio 1’s Drum & Bass charts. Phetsta show cased his versatility by slowing things down to 130 bpm for a guest single on Aquasky’s label Passenger Recordings.

In 2008 he released From My Eyes, which received significant Radio 1 support from Annie Mac. and held onto a top ten position on Drum ‘n’ Bass Arena for eight weeks straight. Phetsta also teamed up with fellow Perth based producer ShockOne to unleash the award winning (PDMA Track of the Year 2008) single The Sun. The duo also collaborated with London based Metrik on the dance floor tear out True Believer which featured on ShockOne’s self titled extended player on Viper Recordings.

2009 proved successful again with Phetsta & Shock One’s Cyclones gaining day time rotation on Australia’s Triple J, including a top three placing on Super Request. Their next single The Sun 2009 has also received significant airplay as well as television support on ABC Australia’s video clip show Rage.

2010 will see the release of a brand new EP, plus remixes for Bassline Smith, DJ Panik, Hot Pink Delorean and Camo & Krooked.

Phetsta’s DJ skills have seen him tour both nationally and overseas, including two eight week long sell out tours of Europe and one in The United States. His music has found its way into the record boxes of the likes of Pendulum, Grooverider, Andy C and Annie Mac - again making this one act you do not want to miss out on!

L.A.O.S (FIN) (Hospital Recordings, Spearhead, Defunked)
http://www.myspace.com/largeamountofsoul
L.A.O.S. is a collaboration of three oldschool beatheadz Abraham, D-bex and JayEm. They have known each other for several years but not until 2002 they understood the obvious fact that they should join forces in music production. They share the same passion for music and their taste of music is expectionally identical.

L.A.O.S. sound is mainly melodic, dancefloor oriented drum and bass but their wide aspect in music wont hold them in one genre. As one wise man said: “There are only two types of music: good and bad”.

L.A.O.S. has a bunch of releases on labels like Hospital (UK), Raw Canvas (4hero remix) (UK), Spearhead (UK) and Spin Recordings (DK). Their tracks are getting dj support from names like Gilles Peterson, London Elektricity, Zinc, Blu Mar Ten, Blame, Annie Mac (BBC Radio1), Kasra and Utah Jazz just to name a few. Their release “Panda Style” has gained worldwide recognition and future will tell will these boys be known for inventing “endangered species step” music genre. In 2007 they were asked to do a remix for 4hero of their track called “Morning Child“.

In 2009 their own label imprint “Large Amount of Soul” released an EP called “So Much To Tell you” with four highly rated dancefloor smashers: “Back no more”, “So much to tell you”, “Rise” and “I want you”. In april 2009 Spin Recordings released a single with tracks “GTGD feat. Kaleb” and “Something in the air“. It went directly to Beatport top10 and stayed there for a good while. L.A.O.S. is planning of releasing album at the end of 2009 so they will be busy in the studio as well as djing around the globe.

Having hit Auckland in 2008, D-Bex just couldn’t stay away - and is back in NZ this Easter to deliver a serving of the best liquid Drum and Bass Finland has to offer! Its time to do it… Panda Style.

First release earlybird tickets are $29.90+BF nationwide. Earlybird tickets are STRICTLY limited - and with SIX internationals you don’t want to miss these highly desirable tickets at this ridiculous price!

DOORLY BIO
What do Ibiza Rocks, Wax:On, After Party, Metropolis and Reclaim The Dance Floor all have in common? The cream of international DJ line-ups? Legendary tales of debauchery? A clutch of awards and critical acclaim? Yes, yes, and yes, and one more important ingredient; genre-hopping resident and rapidly rising UK producer/DJ talent, Doorly.
Presiding over an electronic melting pot of glitch, techno, electro, drum’n'bass and dubstep doused with hip-hop and splashes of indie; Doorly’s movement behind the decks is relentless. Scratching and splicing riffs, loops, beats and bass to form a sonically seamless, mash-up masterpiece as seen on his recent mini-mix for Annie Mac; it’s understandable that Doorly is often described as ‘an old school block party DJ using new school technology’.
His first big break came in april 2008, when Doorly was invited by Pete Tong to spin live on BBC Radio 1’s Essential Mix as part of the ‘In New DJs We Trust’ Introducing Tour, leading to spots on the Radio One Stage at Creamfields and the Radio One Ibiza Weekend where he hosted the main stage.
In turn, Doorly landed residencies at Wax: On, Metropolis and Ibiza Rocks where he also now presents the Ibiza Rocks Podcast. More recently, he’s also added Manumission’s new Ibiza techno/glitch creation Reclaim the Dancefloor @ Eden to the list and earned a place on Radio One’s ‘Annie Mac presents…’ tour; with him his usual epic DJ set up: 3 CDJs, 2 x 1210s, an EFX unit and a Pioneer 800!
In addition to his residencies and guesting for others, Doorly’s own night, Afterparty, in his hometown of Huddersfield, was recently voted Galaxy radio’s ‘Best Club Night’ and listed as Mixmag’s number one UK club night in 2008, attracting the likes of 2manyDJs, Annie Mac, Herve and Dave Spoon in the past 6 months alone. Indeed, spinning from the Ukraine to Australia, Germany to Egypt, Doorly has played alongside dance’s finest such as Groove Armada, Armand van Helden, Chase and Status, Kissy Sell Out, Tiga, Fake Blood, Skream, Jon Carter, Noisia, Diplo, Proxy, Scratch Perverts, Sinden and Soulwax to name but a few – as well as an epic 3 hour – 3 way dance with Zane Lowe and Mark Ronson!
On the production front, Doorly’s now slouch either with recent remixes for artists including the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Basement Jaxx, Frankmusic, Calvin Harris, Don diablo, X-Press 2 and Cagedbaby. All crafted in Doorly’s inimitable, genre defying style, from techno and glitch through electro to dubstep & back again! Doorly’s remixes have earned radio spins from the likes of Annie Mac and Pete Tong as well as being an omnipresent force at the top of the Hypemachine charts.
Wax:On Music, the night’s new label will be the home for resident Doorly’s own debut release ‘Toys/Horsestep’ set to drop in late September/October. Enjoying early support from the likes of Herve and Toddla T, the debut EP is winning a growing collection of impresive fans, which currently boasts Tiga, Erol Alkan and Brodinski amongst their ranks.
2009 has already seen Doorly’s work both on and away from the decks turn heads, with growing press, more remixes to drop over the summer and a debut EP release on the way – it seems like things are just getting started!

NICEUP.ORG.NZ & NEWTOWN SOUND IN ASSOCIATION WITH RADIO ACTIVE & BASE FM PRESENT…

MUNGO’S HI FI (SCOTLAND) & EARL GATESHEAD (TROJAN, UK)

FRIDAY 12 FEBRUARY - KHUJA LOUNGE, AUCKLAND

SATURDAY 13 FEBRUARY - BODEGA, WELLINGTON

NiceUp and Newtown Sound are kicking off 2010 with two of the biggest reggae dubstep nights to hit Aotearoa when Mungo’s Hi Fi, straight outta Scotland, and DJ Earl Gateshead, from UK’s legendary Trojan Records, reach our shores this February.
Since forming in 2000, Mungo’s Hi Fi have been one of the most progressive forces in international reggae, unleashing a myriad of highly sought-after releases on their Scotch Bonnet label while playing countless sell-out gigs throughout the UK and Europe.
Drawing from a rich heritage of Jamaican soundsystem culture, Mungo’s produce a bass-heavy sound with a distinctively quirky twist that has garnered them a cult following across the world and earned them high praise from the likes of BBC DJ Mary-Anne Hobbes, UK soundsystem legend Jah Shaka and the late great John Peel.
The lads from Glasgow have collaborated with some of the biggest names in both old-school and new-school reggae including Sugar Minott, Sister Nancy, Ranking Joe, Kenny Knots, Earl 16, Top Cat, Brother Culture and Warrior Queen.
What’s more, Mungo’s Hi Fi are equally at home in the world of dubstep, with releases from their second label Scrub a Dub on high-rotation with some of the scene’s most influential DJs.
Joining them is Earl Gateshead, selector and leader of Trojan Soundsystem, the official sound of Trojan Records UK. Earl began his DJ career in 1979 when he played reggae records between punk bands in Brixton. He later built his own soundsystem and installed it at the famous Dive Bar in Soho, establishing a respected reputation throughout London and also becoming resident DJ at Blue Note and later Fabric.
After completing a 20-year residency at The Dive Bar, Earl began to organise and perform at a series of events called Reggae Nights that received worldwide attention. He has toured Europe and Australasia with Big Youth, Dr Alimantado and Cutty Ranks among others.
He currently runs a monthly event in London called Rootikal alongside his co-resident and long-time friend David Rodigan and tours the globe playing records from the extensive Trojan catalogue, spreading the original message from Jamaica’s golden era of reggae music.

Don’t miss what are set to be two of Aotearoa’s hottest reggae and dubstep events in 2010. Tickets $20 on the door.

THE GASLAMPKILLER (Brainfeeder + Low End Theory L.A)

The Gaslamp Killer is a Los Angeles-based DJ whose eclectic style ranges from psychedelia and world music to dubstep and left-field hip-hop. Associated with Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder Records, he made his production debut in the late 2000s with a series of EPs. Born William Benjamin Bensussen, he originally comes from San Diego, CA, whose downtown Gaslamp District’s bar scene inspired him to name himself the Gaslamp Killer in disgust for much of the patronage. Upon relocating to Los Angeles, he found a niche for himself amid the city’s massive underground party scene and ultimately found a home for himself as a resident DJ at the club Low End Theory, which resulted in a series of club-sponsored podcasts. He also released a series of mix CDs, among them Gaslamp Killers (2007), It’s a Rocky Road (2007), I Spit on Your Grave (2008), Hell and the Lake of Fire Are Waiting for You! (2009), and All Killer (2009), the latter a label showcase for the London-based world psychedelia imprint Finders Keepers Records. As a producer, the Gaslamp Killer made his debut in the late 2000s, releasing, for instance, a split single with Free the Robots, “The Killer Robots,” on Obey Records in 2008 and an EP, My Troubled Mind, on Flying Lotus’ Brainfeeder Records in 2009

ERU DANGERSPIEL

Eru Dangerspiel is drummer/producer/DJ Riki Gooch. With dirty, bottom-heavy funk and psychedelic rhythm and blues, Eru Dangerspiel offers something completely different to any other current NZ sounds.

1ST SHOW IN NZ:
With their massive debut EP ‘In The Death Car’ featuring the now infamous “chainsaw track,” 16bit have rapidly shot into the limelight.
Their massively varied productions delve into every corner of the dubstep world, ranging from “halfstep rhythms…shot through with 10,000 watts of current” to “glitched 2-step and sub driven riddims”.
Their live shows are intense, to say the least and they’ve seen support from Kissy Sell Out, Mala (Digital Mystikz), Rusko, Chef and many others with a constantly growing fanbase.
Hot on the heels of the Death Car EP, 16bit will soon be dropping their follow-up EP on the legendary Southside Dubstars imprint.
They played their debut set in Tokyo, Japan just two months after their debut 12″ (PCP/President Of Europe) dropped, and have since played massive sets in Paris, London, and all around the UK and Europe.
